Hitting a Claude plan limit can flip to pay-as-you-go usage credits, if you enabled them

Why this label: Both sources are the vendor's own documentation, so this is the vendor's description of its own behaviour; no one tested it independently and we have not run it. Plans, names and prices change; check the current page.

Tried
Keep using Claude or Claude Code on a paid plan (Pro, Max 5x, Max 20x) after hitting the plan's five-hour or weekly limit, with usage credits enabled.
Broke
Documented behaviour rather than an incident: when you fully use an included limit with usage credits on, requests switch to pay-as-you-go pricing at standard API rates and keep working, shown as 'Now using credits'. You may briefly still see the 'approaching your usage limit' notice, so a limit that used to stop you no longer does. Charges appear separately from the subscription.
Cause
  • confirmed Usage credits are designed to continue work after plan limits and bill at standard API rates until the monthly spending cap is reached or the balance runs out with auto-reload off (Anthropic's help center).

“Confirmed” means the source states it as established; “suspected” means the source treats it as a theory or it is unsettled. We did not verify either ourselves.

Fix
From Anthropic's docs: set a monthly spending cap when you enable usage credits (the 'Adjust limit' option) rather than 'Set to unlimited'; review the auto-reload threshold, since auto-reload adds funds when the balance drops; turn on usage alerts; you can disable usage credits at any time. In Claude Code, /usage and /usage-credits show your plan usage and credits spend per Anthropic's cost docs.
Prevention
Decide in advance whether you want plan limits to be hard stops. If you do, leave usage credits off; if you do not, pick a cap you would be happy to pay in full, and check the credits row weekly.
